What NOAA data shows

NOAA Climate.gov has reported a long-term decline in January–March snowfall across much of the contiguous United States since the late 1950s, while some colder northern areas have shown increases during parts of winter. NOAA also notes that a warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture, so large snowstorms can still occur when temperatures remain cold enough for snow.

Why snow-day trends are local

A school closure depends on more than seasonal snowfall totals. A single overnight ice event, an unusually timed storm, extreme cold, road treatment, transportation policy, and local infrastructure can all matter.
