Will Michigan schools have a snow day tomorrow?

Michigan does not use one statewide snowfall number that automatically closes every school. Local districts make operating decisions using local weather, road access, transportation, facilities, staffing, and safety conditions.

The calculator above estimates weather disruption for the Michigan location you enter. It does not replace a district announcement, and a severe forecast can affect different districts differently.

Michigan winter-school context

  • Road conditions vary by route. Michigan State Police notes that major roadways are normally cleared first and that rural or county roads may be worse during winter weather.
  • Mi Drive is the official statewide road-information tool. MDOT provides traffic speeds, cameras, incidents, winter maintenance vehicles, and snowplow information through Mi Drive.
  • Cancelled instructional time is handled locally. Michigan Department of Education guidance explains that districts use state-law flexibility commonly called snow days, make up time, or use other permitted options when instruction is cancelled.
  • Always confirm the final school status with your local district. The percentage on this page is a weather-based planning estimate.

Michigan guidance reviewed September 11, 2026. Local district notices always take priority over this estimate.

What the Michigan estimate checks

The baseline model evaluates morning snowfall, overnight accumulation, prior-day heavy snow, freezing precipitation and refreeze signals, severe cold, wind gusts, and visibility. Active National Weather Service winter alerts are shown for US locations when available.
